Waikato company hosts global storytelling webinar for Microsoft

Kiwi company Enlighten Designs leads in data journalism

Locally founded Enlighten Designs celebrated their 19th birthday here in the Waikato, and what better way to celebrate than displaying thought leadership on a global scale for Microsoft?

Data-driven storytelling has recently come to the forefront as a partial address to consumer concerns over perceived misinformation online, and this kiwi company is helping lead the charge.

A long-standing Microsoft partner, the 70 person innovation studio landed a contract to be the delivery partner for Microsoft’s newly formed Data Journalism Program back in 2016.

Since that time their work with the Associated Press, Vox Media, CIO and other global media organizations has earned them the spotlight when it comes to data journalism.

Along with Enlighten’s Data Insights Practice Lead, Verne Roberts, founder and CEO Damon Kelly discussed how public access to technology has increased exponentially and the resultant consumer demand for transparent, easy-to-understand data has transformed the way stories are told.

Throw in the ‘fake news’ phenomenon and you have industry ripe for digital transformation.

Using Power BI, Microsoft’s powerful data analytics and visualisation tool, Kelly and Roberts shared just a few examples of compelling, interactive visualisations the Enlighten Designs team have created for journalists - world class brands like Red Bull and Nascar, and media organisations.

The webinar was held from 7am – 8am NZST Thursday April 19 with over 1600 registrants internationally and is now available to view via their website.
